Favorite Movies of 2011 - In Theaters

I try to make a point of seeing one hundred movies a year I've never seen before. They can be seen in theaters, on DVD, rented, borrowed, etc. (Torrenting is discouraged unless it's out of print.) Here are my fifteen favorites from this year that I've seen in theaters.

This is the color version of a Christmas present for a friend. I will get a print of this to you as soon as I have toner, darlin! :)

Big Art Dump of Sexy Girls

Well, I did not realize I was going to do this much drawing this weekend, but wow. Lookit that. Most of it turned out well, so here it goes! :)

DR. SKETCHY'S NYC 6TH BIRTHDAY
Yesterday was the last Dr. Sketchy's NYC of the year and a thousand praises should be given to Lillet St. Sunday who was not only an amazing model, but her final pose was twenty minutes standing and in action. I've seen maybe two models who can do that and she deserves all the prizes. I showed up late, but here are my drawings from the session.

5 minutes

10 minutes (challenge: incorporate past Dr. Sketchy's events. I tried to draw Lillet as a fairy playing the ocarina with Justine Joli's Link, but I ran out of time. Very interested in finishing this tho.)

10 minutes

20 minutes (challenge: party games. I did a second drawing to get a better grasp of her face.)

20 minutes. This, I do not like, because it's too precious with details and the anatomy and composition suffer. I used what time I had left to do new drawings and concentrate on her expression. But I wanted to include it here because I think more artists should be honest about sharing their lousy drawings.

Much better! More vibrant action and composition. This was her killer 20 minute standing post, so I figures the least I can do is do her justice. These took about 2 minutes each, I think?

Someone tell me what this looks with old 3-D glasses. :)

RANDOM SKETCHES
Just some dancing drawings when I was out yesterday and in the night before that.
Sat in Dark Bar listening to DJ Templar, Jeffo, and Xris Smack spinning different goth tunes. Felt like drawing different dancing girlies.

The artist (not seen: reds, pinks, and greens, completing my hipster goth look)

Yesterday's dancing girly drawings, mostly trying to figure out how I move when I gogo.

Random doodle of a mod girl from an old photograph

Thought process for a possible illustration for a friend

FIGURE DRAWING TOUCH-UPS
I went through my old figure drawings I'd recorded and decided to clean up some of them. Some got worse, some got better, but it was a fun exercise now that I have a better sense of the human body. :)

DOODLE OF LOVE!
Quick postie doodle of my lovely friend Polly Guo who is an incredible artist and hilarious and watching her work has helped me so much as an artist. I wanted to draw her in this gorgeous outfit she wore once, but I barely remember it. XD Anyway, she's awesome and I just wanted to sketch it and share it.

Napkin Doodles

Napkin doodles from The Chameleons' show at The Delancey. This is what one doodles when their anxiety has flared up, meds are at home, so one sits in the back drawing monsters, people in the crowd, possible flyer designs, and a Mr. Mark Burgess himself at the bottom while listening to good tunes.

There is no way to properly describe what it feels like to hear "Swamp Thing" live. That song changed my life.

2011: The Year in Review

Blank Template

PROS:
~started working in a loose inking style that stayed close to my original rough pencils that made me more comfortable with finishing work
~grew more comfortable with drawing the human figure (many thanks to Steve Gaffney for his help)
~broke out of yellow/purple comfort zone and got into new styles
~managed to make a lot of new favorite pieces despite my injured drawing hand
~curated an art show!

CONS:
~didn't finish a lot of illustrations and animation because of my injury
~limited myself by drawing a lot of 3/4 portraits. Next year, action poses and backgrounds!
~barely did any finished work in August because of a number of breakdowns over home and work.

Hoping to do more awesome work next year! :)

Shot 54 - Flower Tangle

(Huh. I thought I posted this.)

Last year I participated in Bill Plympton's Guard Dog Global Jam, where participating animators selected a shot from 'Guard Dog' they wanted to re-animate in their own style, did so, and sent the final shot to Bill where it was reassembled as a new film with dozens of different styles tying it all together. I animated my shot when I was in the throes of a swollen wrist tendon and I never shared it because I was so exhausted and disappointed but I can finally look at it now and I'm so glad I finished it. The whole film is just gorgeous and I feel so privileged to have been a part of it. Much love to Bill and his crew for getting this project assembled and running.

Go Team CNN!

This is what happens when you watch as much CNN as I do, especially international disasters covered by Sanjay Gupta and Anderson Cooper. (Bless 'em.) I think the original sketch came around during the Haiti earthquake, I forgot about it, and found it again when I was trolling through old image folders.

Contempt

The first flyer I designed for Contempt! (Can you see the halftone? I can't see it from the New Post page. Anyhoo, come on out! 10:30pm-3:45am in the lower level of The Delancey down on 168 Delancey St. It's always a good party! We're very friendly! No dress code, just tip the bartender.) RSVP here: Contempt: Facebook Page

Print out this flyer or show it to us on your phone or whatever and you get in for $5.

INSPIRATION! BOOKS!

There are days when I hate drawing. When I want to huck everything in the trash, move to Missouri and work in data entry for Initech for the rest of my life. What stops me from trashing so many expensive art supplies is remembering why I fell in love, why I can't imagine doing anything else with my life, and what revitalizes my love for entertainment. Here are parts of five books I absolutely love.

Self-Portrait with the new hairdo

I'm starting to draw other portraits so I get more practice, but I started doing self-doodles last year to figure out the details of my face. Also I like this outfit. Damn good practice!

More stuff soon. Hi everybody!

Because You're a Girl (Spoilers!)

Utena is one bitch-ass cool awesome show and the ending is such a glorious middle finger to convention and more people should watch it. After finishing the mermaid last night, I cleaned up the original sketch, started last night and finished a few minutes ago. Yup yup.

The show is about a girl who wants to be a prince and why it's not a very good idea, but it's still a super feminist show. Also lots of commentary on adolescence and sexuality and psychology. Basically a shoujo 'Evangelion'. It seems super tame until you hit episode 14. Then your brain blows up. It took me at least five years to figure out the ending.

Oh, also stupidly huge spoilers.

Here's my trace of a xerox of the original scribble that started it all.

Here's my clean-up of the trace.

Here's my final.

Mermaid

New sexy girlie! It's a mermaid, you know.

Mermaid - In Progress

Working on another sexy girlie. Started with an old figure drawing this evening and did some rough color a few hours ago. Should have it done tomorrow. (It has also occurred to me I have few of the supplies I need for any Halloween costume I had in mind and parties star this Thursday. Oops. Well, at least I'm having fun.) :)

Lots to fix before the final, but I like where it's going.

Dr Sketchy's NYC - Dia de los Muertos!!

I went to Dr. Sketchy's tonight for the first time in awhile and got a surprising amount of decent drawings in after a few months without live drawing. Cheers to Rogizoid and Draven Star for their excellent modeling! :)

Canary Yellow

Here's a new pin-up girlie and some other doodles.

Self-portrait in the style of Bob's Burgers.
